Welcome to Skullvines Press

Tuesday, December 09th, 2008 | Author: sdballz

You’re hiking through the darker, haunted part of the woods that your parents had always forbidden you to explore. A few miles in, the fog is much thicker and you are tempted to crawl onto a layer and take a nap.

You continue, though, and eventually come across some castle ruins. All that stand are moldy brick walls marking the perimeter.

You step closer and find a single skull protruding from the soft earth. Vines have sprouted from its eyes and nose; from between the teeth and the cracks in its cranium. Each one looks a little bit different: some are beautiful, some grotesque, some humorous. Some are green and thriving with blossoms, while others appear dead, but are still strong.

You kneel for a closer look, and you can hear them whispering to you. They are each eager to share a story. You listen awhile, entertained but feeling your sanity slip away.

Realizing this, you try to stand but rotted hands reach from the soil and pull you back.  You aren’t going anywhere.

Welcome to Skullvines Press.

Rob Callahan could use some help

Friday, July 16th, 2010 | Author: sdballz

A great author in Minnesota and very nice guy, has recently been attacked by pit bulls at a dog park. The owner is unable to help with the medical costs, so there’s this trailer contest that, if he wins, would offer enough prize money to knock a big dent in the bills.

Here’s a picture of some of the damage:

Here are some quotes from his Facebook:

“…a couple of pits jumped me at the dog park and bit me twice in the arm and once in the leg before their owner got them somewhat under control. I’ve been hospitalized, pumped full of intravenous antibiotics and given more antibiotics in an attempt to fight the deep tissue infection this caused.”

“I am also uncertain as to whether or not I will regain full feeling in my thumb and two of my fingers. The owner, while initially apologetic, turns out to be incapable of covering my medical costs. If you vote for my trailer, the cash prize will help a little, so please consider voting for me.”

And here’s the direct link to vote: http://www.fringeyawards.com/view-trailer/?v_id=61

Thanks in advance!

Steampunkers!

Saturday, June 05th, 2010 | Author: sdballz

From K.H. Koehler’s blog:

Just a head’s up: my ongoing steampunk series Black Jack Derringer is part of Steampunk Week over at Velvet’s site at http://vvb32reads.blogspot.com/

BJD will be featured on June 7 as part of Wild West/Apocalyptic day. Velvet will be interviewing “Wild” Alice West–no, really, although, from what I understand, things didn’t turn out exactly as planned when Velvet stepped into the Skillet. Apparently that wascally Mr. Treen got carried away fleecing some governor’s wife and Velvet got caught in the crossfire and nearly lost her head.

There will be prizes and good times had by all. There will also be steampunk fashion and…steampunk cake!

Please bookmark the site, watch for prizes, and enjoy your Steampunk experience.

And remember to pick up Black Jack Derringer at the Merchant’s Keep!

Shane Moore is getting married today!

Shane Moore, author of the Abyss Walker series, is getting married today and we wanted to offer our heartfelt congratulations. Have a great wedding and a fantastic weekend!

There’s a new store in town.

Saturday, April 24th, 2010 | Author: sdballz

And it’s called The Merchant’s Keep. We’ve created it to offer a place for small presses to have their books sold, and not at the 50-55% off retail that so many bigger stores insist on taking for each sale.

Small presses just can’t survive like that. With good enough sales, they can eek along but there isn’t much room for growth.

Buying direct from a press offers the best support to them and their authors, but with so many other presses out there taking people’s money without providing the product, it’s getting harder for customers to trust that route.

So we decided to expand a bit, creating a separate store environment from the Skullvines site, so others could be included. We take much less of a commission per sale so the presses make more profit.

And here’s the thing: we’ll only put a book on our site if we have it in our hands (sorry, no pre-orders), so customers can buy with confidence that they’ll receive what they ordered. The site even says exactly how many we have in stock (it’s near the “add to cart” buttons).

For now, it’s still a work in progress. We’ve already got a little over a dozen presses preparing to get some titles to us, but the site isn’t 100% finished yet.

So why are we mentioning it now? Well, presses of any genre are welcome to get with us, and we’d like them to know about it. But also, we’ve switched the Skullvines titles over to it and now have them available over there. There’s no sense in us running two bookstores (at Skullvines and The Merchant’s Keep) when they’re both coming from the same place. So you won’t find the bookstore here anymore, only the book descriptions and links to their product pages at The Merchant’s Keep where you can buy it. We wanted to clarify this in case there was any confusion.

Buying Skullvines titles from The Merchant’s Keep is the exact same as buying from us. It’s just that, in the very near future, you’ll find other titles over there from other publishers, broadening your shopping experience, also available straight from us!

We’re excited about this and think it’s a great way to expand as we come along our third year in business. CLICK HERE to visit the site, and keep an eye on it as it grows. Don’t mind the occasional mess. It’s still taking shape.

Also, the forum is going strong, so check that out, as well, by CLICKING HERE.

More changes coming up…

Saturday, April 17th, 2010 | Author: sdballz

So we’ve had some weird changes lately, and they’ve given way to even stranger things. As we’re coming into our third year in existence, we’re working to make plenty of improvements that will benefit both the press and all of our authors.

So keep an eye on us and be ready to let out the occasional WTF?

Or it could just be Jerrod’s medication and having access to everything. Either way, what fun!
