Welcome to Skullvines Press

Tuesday, December 09th, 2008 | Author: sdballz

You’re hiking through the darker, haunted part of the woods that your parents had always forbidden you to explore. A few miles in, the fog is much thicker and you are tempted to crawl onto a layer and take a nap.

You continue, though, and eventually come across some castle ruins. All that stand are moldy brick walls marking the perimeter.

You step closer and find a single skull protruding from the soft earth. Vines have sprouted from its eyes and nose; from between the teeth and the cracks in its cranium. Each one looks a little bit different: some are beautiful, some grotesque, some humorous. Some are green and thriving with blossoms, while others appear dead, but are still strong.

You kneel for a closer look, and you can hear them whispering to you. They are each eager to share a story. You listen awhile, entertained but feeling your sanity slip away.

Realizing this, you try to stand but rotted hands reach from the soil and pull you back.  You aren’t going anywhere.

Beware of Plagiarism

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 | Author: sdballz

We saw on Mercedes M. Yardley’s BLOG today that someone has been going around, submitting plagiarized stories to small horror magazines, etc.  Not only is this person rewriting Stephen King stories, but new writers are falling prey, as well.  Here’s another EXAMPLE and yet ANOTHER.

And apparently, this person is DEAD.  So it’s probably not his/her real name.  Now that the offender has been exposed, he or she may simply pick another name and keep at it.

So be on alert, both publishers and writers.  If a publisher gets an email submission from this person, perhaps you can turn the email over to authorities for tracking purposes.

We can only imagine what kind of a douche would do such a thing.

Chris Conlon on why writers should read

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 | Author: sdballz

It seems like a no-brainer that writers should read, but we, too, have encountered many an aspiring writer who claims not to read much.  For this reason, we wanted to provide a link to Chris Conlon’s thoughts on the subject.

READ IT HERE

It’s worth taking a few moments to check out.  And then grab one of those old books off your shelf that you’d bought years ago and never touched.  Read it.  Then find something in another genre (and a different time period) and read that, too.  You’ll be amazed at how your writing improves.
